2013 IIW AWARDS: Walter Edström Medal

The Walter Edström Medal, sponsored by the Swedish Delegation, was awarded to the late Mr IWE Halil Kaya Gedik (Turkey). The award was presented by Mr Lars Johansson, Head of the Swedish Delegation, to Mrs Hülya Gedik-Sadiklar, who received the award on behalf of her late father.
The late Halil Kaya Gedik, Founder of Gedik Welding (1963) and later, Gedik Casting & Valve (1967), was one of the first international welding engineers in Turkey. His hard work and dedication as an industrialist resulted in the expansion and diversification of his companies under the umbrella of GEDIK Holding, founded in 1983. Based on his personal philosophy of “giving back to society,” he set up Gedik Education Foundation (GEV) in 1994 and it has since provided innumerable educational and training opportunities via its non-profit welding training centre, benefitting almost 40,000 people to date. Through GEV, he distinguished himself as a devoted philanthropist, undertaking several “social responsibility projects.” His enduring altruism included the construction and donation of schools and dormitories as his “contributions to the Turkish education system.”
After GEV became the IIW’s responsible member for Turkey in 2008, he invested his time and effort into making International Welding Engineering Education readily available in his country. As an initiative of GEV, the Gedik University opened its doors for the academic year 2010-2011 and remains a true testament to successful and strategic cooperation between industry and academia.
Halil Kaya Gedik was also instrumental in the creation of the Turkish Welding Technology Academy (TKTA), founded in 2009 to federate the Turkish welding industry, thereby undertaking a leadership role in the growth and development of the Turkish welding sector. Both TKTA and Gedik University have since become additional IIW Member Societies for Turkey.
For his numerous charitable works, he received several accolades, including the “Outstanding Service Medal” from the Turkish Grand National Assembly in 2007 and an Honorary Doctorate degree from Usak University. In his honour, the “Halil Kaya Gedik Award” will also be presented for the first time during the 2013 IIW Annual Assembly in Essen-Germany. In the short period of time that Turkey has been a Member Country, Halil Kaya Gedik demonstrated remarkable loyalty and commitment to the IIW.
As the IIW community knows, via Gedik Holding, the 2010 IIW Annual Assembly was rescued after Halil Kaya Gedik accepted to host this major event in Istanbul, virtually at the last minute. It is for this single outstanding action towards the IIW that he was posthumously awarded the 2013 Walter Edström Medal.
