Voltage drop at an electrode metal droplet and its effect on the arc voltage value have been determined. Geometrical parameters of the droplet and length of the arc have been estimated using a machine consisting of laser and high-speed digital video camera, by synchronously registering the arc voltage and welding current curves. It has been established that the voltage drop per unit length of the droplet may exceed the voltage drop gradient in the arc column, and the arc voltage may increase with growth of the droplet and reduction of the arc voltage.

Considered are regularities occurring in physical-chemical processes of plastic deformation, mass transfer and phase formation, which accompany formation of joints in dissimilar materials (copper, titanium, aluminium and their alloys, and different grades of steels) characterised by a limited mutual solubility under conditions of pressure joining for a wide range of external loading rates, i.e. from 1x10-4 to 1x104-1x105 s-1.

Feasibility of use of the arc mechanized processes in the field conditions is considered. It was found that welding units with internal combustion engines can be used in this case as arc supply sources for the semi-automatic machines. Accumulators with a series-parallel connection are offered as a stable power source for supply of the electric circuit elements. Diagram of connection of the power source for the semi-automatic machine systems with a definite algorithm of accumulators switching (for their charging and service in devices of the mechanized arc equipment) has been developed.

Dependence of weld shape on gap value in consumable electrode arc welding in Ar + 25 % CO2 mixture of a square butt joint was established and a deterministic-statistical model of weld shape with allowance for a gap effect was developed. The developed model is recommended for use in the design of software of the system of adaptive control of arc welding of butt joints with a non-stable gap.

A deterministic-statistical model was developed of robot adaptation to the gap in consumable-electrode arc welding in a mixture of Ar + 25 % CO2. It may be applied in development of the software of adaptive control systems of robots for MIG and TIG, as well as submerged-arc welding.

Results of investigations into peculiarities of the processes of mass transfer and phase formation in joints of dissimilar metals characterized by a limited mutual solubility (Cu + Al, Ti + stainless steel, St.3 + Al, etc.) are given. The joints were made by pressure welding using high-rate methods of deforming.
