Microstructure, element and phase compositions of weld metal of the joints produced by arc welding on alloy 1460 using filler wires Sv1201 and Sv1201 + Sc were studied. Main mechanisms of the effect of scandium on structure formation, chemical heterogeneity and mechanical properties of the weld metal were revealed. It is shown that scandium addition leads to grain refining, extra saturation of solid solution with scandium, formation of dispersed particles in the bulk of grains and complex-composition eutectic. The weld metal in this case has an increased strength.

Peculiarities of structure-phase condition of metal of the welds and welded joints made on alloy 1460 by argon-arc welding using standard filler wire Sv1201 and experimental wire 1201 with an addition of scandium were studied by transmission electron microscopy. Main structural changes caused by adding scandium are characterised by grain refining, increase in volume density of dislocations, formation of fine inclusions containing scandium, and activation of solid solution decomposition processes.

Considered are current developments in the field of electrode wire feed mechanisms for welding, surfacing and cutting of steels and aluminium alloys. Classification of the main types of feed mechanisms is given. Of particular interest for welding specialists are the mechanisms that feed electrode wire with controlled non-stationary character of movement (intermittent, modulated or pulsed feed). Advantages and drawbacks of some ingenious designs of the pulsed mechanisms are considered.

Effect of heat treatment (ageing at 350 °C, 1 h) on changes in structure-phase composition of weld metal in 1460 alloy joints produced by argon-arc welding using Sv1201 and Sv1201 + 0.5 % Sc fillers is considered. It is shown that heat treatment leads to a considerable increase in volume fraction of fine phases, differing in morphology and phase composition. In metal containing no scandium, Al-Cu phases differing in copper concentration are formed, while Al-Li phases have a more complex structure due to inclusions of fine Al-Zr and Al-Cu phases. Complex phase precipitates of the lamellar (Al-Cu/Al3Sc) and globular (Al-Li/Al-Zr, Al=Sc) types are formed in Sc-containing metal.

Artificial neural networks have been used to asses the quality of underwater welded joints with four types of fit-up defects: edge misalignment, change in part-to-torch distance, change in the gap between the parts and presence of tack welds. The efficiency of neural network application for the above types of defects is shown, except for a change in the edge gap.

The possibility of controlling the position of a low-temperature plasma jet by superposition of a transverse magnetic field on the initial section of the plasma flow was studied. It is established that the main parameters influencing the angle of the jet deviation, are the controlling electric magnet current and specific energy of the plasma jet. It is shown that the direction of plasma flow deviation depends on the directions of the magnetic flow in the zone of interaction and direction of the gas flow swirling.

Described is the technique of defining the condition of stability of flat solidification front of soldered seams on copper M1 with self-fluxing solder on the basis of Sn-Pb-Bi system low-melting alloy and surfactants as fluxing components of the soldering composition. Solidification is the final stage of soldered seam formation and their service characteristics depend on conditions of its proceeding in soldered joints. Studying the process of solidification of soldered seams by calculations opens up opportunities for forecasting technological parameters of soldering processes. The characteristics obtained as a result of calculation enable to adjust technological conditions of soldering in order to improve service characteristics of soldered joints.

Classification of controlling magnetic fields used for implementation of electromagnetic effects is given. Published data on the efficiency of application of different electromagnetic effects in arc welding and surfacing processes are systematized and generalized. It is established that the spectrum of addressed technological problems is related to vector, amplitude and frequency characteristics of the controlling magnetic fields. The most promising ways of improving these technologies are identified.

The nature of structural transformation occurring in aluminium alloy B96 during heating in welding was studied by scanning electron microscopy. The composition of the phases and their morphological peculiarities were estimated quantitatively and qualitatively, depending on the thermophysical conditions of nonconsumable electrode and electron beam welding. Effect of the volume content of phases on the processes of initiation and propagation of cracks under the conditions of off-centre fracture of samples of welded joints was evaluated.
